Why I Love Coaching
I cannot believe that I have been coaching in some capacity for the last two decades. Two decades of working in one-on-one and in group settings to help people meet their goals, better their skills, and lead their best lives. It’s been two decades and the fact still remains, I love it!
It wasn’t until recently that I realized the there is a unifying reason I have done any of my jobs (aside from the financial factor, or course). I love helping people live their best lives.
You might stop there and be like, “really?”, and then list off all of the different jobs I’ve had with a questioning side eye; but I swear to you, the joy I get from helping someone else have a good day or better their life in some way (even if it was by making them a Quiznos sandwich), fills my heart and always has. I love helping people smile, find peace, experience joy, feel empowered, and live happier live.
What my coaching sessions typically look like
I had a beautiful moment this week with an individual client where they told me about the progress they had made recently. They were smiling and excited to share with me all of the things they had done that were directly in alignment with the goals we had set. They were proud of themselves!
And that… that feeling I got while listening to them talk about their accomplishments…that is why I do what I do. There is nothing like watching someone feel positively empowered and proud of themselves. Celebrating someone else’s victories when you have been a part of their journey is so incredibly special.
Seeing that smile and hearing them talk about their experience, gave me literal chills. We weren’t in the same room but I could feel their excited energy building. They looked lighter, energized, and ready to continue their journey.
They felt empowered to take more action.
Now, I know, not every day or session will be that kind of victory. That’s simply not possible or sustainable. BUT recognizing that every other moment we’ve spent in our sessions talking, brainstorming, goal setting, and working toward that feeling of empowerment and pride is essential and worth it’s own little celebration. And I will celebrate the heck out of those victories because they are milestones! They are markers of progress and moments we can look back on in the future if things start to feel hard.
Whenever my former piano students were feeling feeling frustrated with a new piece or concept, I’d encourage them to go back to previous materials from months prior and play through them. My request was often meet by a “really”, a “do I have to”, or a defeated sigh; BUT, when they went back to play those “easier” songs and were able to play them fluidly without any hesitation, we were able to have the “do you remember when THIS used to be hard” conversation. I’d ask the questions, “Do you remember when this “old material” was new? When it was challenging?” or “Do you remember struggling the first time you tried this? Do you remember needing help?”.
Everything takes practice. Everything takes time. And with coaching, I get to be a part of the progression. I get to be the cheerleader, the questioner, the trouble shooter, the listener and reflector, the truth sharer, idea giver, and more. I love helping people realize their potential and find that thing that clicks.
We are works in progress. Eternally.
Every second of every day we have the opportunity to change the narrative. To make our lives just a little more beautiful. I’d love to help you learn how.
